WHY
ARE WE CREATING THIS HAVEN FOR OUR
TRANS-IDENTIFYING YOUTH?
To establish a permanent home for our transgender housing program. We will be able to shape the space to best meet the needs of the program.
To shield our youth from bullying and violence and give them better access to support services. Our young people often experience abuse while commuting. The new site is one train stop away from the center where they receive services.
To offer specific transgender & non-binary services in-house, including workshops, and counseling in a safe environment.
To build a community and support system. We will be able to house our transgender and non-binary youth in one place, as opposed to four scattered sites in Brooklyn.
To further enhance our financial stability by owning an asset.
To reallocate funds for programmatic needs to holistically support our transgender non-binary youth.
ABOUT
THE ALI FORNEY CENTER
The Ali Forney Center protects homeless LGBTQIA+ youth (ages 16- 24) from the harms of homelessness and empowers them with the tools necessary to be safe, live independently, and thrive.
AFC is the largest provider of comprehensive services and housing for homeless LGBTQIA+ young people in NYC and the nation, with 19+ years of experience providing care for this population.
AFC is also NYC’s only LGBTQIA+-specialized agency providing homeless, marginalized LGBTQIA+ young people with:

Meeting basic needs such as access to showers, clothing, personal hygiene supplies, and laundry

Hot meals and to-go lunches

Food education and nutrition counseling

HIV prevention services

Street outreach

Support groups and legal referral
This project is about telling Ali’s story – to take their journey to a wide audience and raise awareness for not only Ali, but their legacy – the Ali Forney Center.
